Month: June 2009
We went to the Owego Strawberry Festival and enjoyed strawberry pierogies while we were there. I’ve never had a pierogie with fruit before. The only kinds I ever tried were potato and sauerkraut. It was actually very good. We wandered around the town while waiting for the fireworks that night, and stopped in a shop called Hand to Man. It is full of all kinds of decorations, soaps, baby clothes, wedding gifts, and other neat things. The coolest thing about the shop is how it’s organized. Each little section is both color coordinated as well as coordinated by the type of item. One little section may contain green Christmas items, another pink sea related items, and yet another may contain blue baby items. It’s really a cute little shop.
The Colonial Days Festival in Painted Post, NY is another festival that I have visited more than once. The reason is, as I said before, every festival has one food item that is worth coming to that festival for on it’s own. Here it is the salt potatoes. They have the best salt potatoes I have ever had. I had loaded salt potatoes the first year (topped with chili, cheese, and onions) the first year and salt potatoes with just butter the next. They were both delicious, but the loaded salt potatoes were definitely the best.
I’ve been to garage sales before where the entire neighborhood sells things on their front lawn at the same time, but I’ve never seen anything as crazy as Streets of Shops in Pine City, NY. It’s like a flea market mixed with a festival. They even had tents that were serving hot dogs, hamburgers, and drinks. Some of the people were even selling new, unopened items, and at least one tent served as it’s own dollar store.
